I took on ten roles over five films because I wanted to gain a broader understanding of the creative and technical side of production and post-production, and also to make use of Massey’s equipment.
As Director of Photography, Camera Operator, Lighting Assistant, Third Assistant Camera and Co-Gaffer/Lighting Assistant, I gained a deeper understanding of the processes of filming and creative problem solving. For Post-Production experience I took on the roles of Editor and Data Information Transfer and Colour Grader which increased my knowledge of editing techniques (Da Vinci Resolve), colour science and grading. This diversity meant that I had to be adaptable to both the film's requirements and the expectations of the team.
Stuck in a Hard Place is a live-action, coming-of-age drama following the tumultuous relationship between father and son. Two men find themselves alone together on a hike in the idyllic New Zealand bush, and the cracks in their relationship start to show. When their trip takes an unexpected turn for the worst, the son realises he must resolve their conflict or risk losing his father forever.
Based on a true story, Flat Rat is a 9min dark comedy about three flatmates who have their bond tested when they’re pressured into killing a rat. This film tells a silly and grim story about friendship, social responsibility, and growing up. Through the laughs, we want to make you squirm, provide a sense of perspective, and remind everybody to find joy in the rat’s nest.
Next of Kin follows Ellie’s return to her childhood home, hoping to mend the rift woven into her life since her father's worsening illness. Swarmed by unhealed memories and brewing tension with her sister Jamie, Ellie is engulfed in a paralysing grip of apprehension, fearing the inevitable farewell. She must find the strength for a meaningful farewell before it’s too late.
Wizard Mischief is an absurdist, neo-gothic short film about wizards, imps and fairies. It follows Lucy, a cruel and impulsive wizard, as she is followed by mischievous imps and culminates with a confrontation with the Fairy Queen over the grave of her mother.
