I worked on two short films, as 2nd AC on Stuck In A Hard Place and DOP for Away With The Faeries. Both roles were highly engaging and let me get a good, broad look at how it is to work on professional film productions, exemplified by the dynamic of a highly influential role like DOP/supporting role of 2nd AC. I greatly valued the opportunity to work on these projects and meet the great teams involved, and the experience solidified my interest in working in the camera dept. of professional films.
Stuck in a Hard Place is a live-action, coming-of-age drama following the tumultuous relationship between father and son. Two men find themselves alone together on a hike in the idyllic New Zealand bush, and the cracks in their relationship start to show. When their trip takes an unexpected turn for the worst, the son realises he must resolve their conflict or risk losing his father forever.
Away With The Faeries is a Psychological Thriller inspired by the bloom and warmth of the 70’s Psychedelic era. As a young couple set up camp in the NZ bush, we can see the strain and tension on their relationship. When Chris goes off to find ingredients in the bush for dinner, he comes back with what he thinks are normal Porcini mushrooms. But after a big fight blows out and the characters go off to different parts of the bush they start to have visions of a fairy like nymph coming from the water, fire and all around them. They both learn things about themselves from this nymph and what ends in a violent and tragic event leads to the personal downfall for each of these characters.
