Sprout Squad Year 3 Journal Highlights
New Zealand tamariki (children) are among the highest screen users in the OECD. To counter this, Sprout Squad journals promote outdoor play and gardening skills for tamariki.
Sprout Squad journals use storytelling to introduce a world of Aotearoa-based plants and bugs, many of which tamariki may encounter near their home or school.

As the illustrator for this project, I collaborated with Alyx Rangihaeata to develop Sprout Squad’s brand identity and world logic by using hero characters and storytelling techniques. We particularly enjoyed creating tactile experiences for tamariki throughout the journal.

Sprout Squad is a gardening initiative for tamariki aged 5–9. It takes the form of journals and a hypothetical greenhouse van. Each year group would receive their own journal — we created one Year 3 journal, to demonstrate how it works.
The kids' journals introduce a range of gardening activities, while the teacher journals provide plans for each activity. Our project nurtures tamariki’s curiosity for the outdoors by learning through play.
