Journey to the West is a classical Chinese text that follows the monk Xuanzang on his pilgrimage to India for Buddhist scriptures. Accompanying him are his four monstrous disciples that protect him from demons and monsters. My adaptation will use the character of Sun Wukong as a representation of Chinese identity, exploring the arc of the Monkey King through the lens of the Chinese diaspora, through character and costume design.
